How big (file size) should my photos be?
That depends what you plan to do with them. If, for example, you only want to make
wallet-size photos, or include a photo on a Web page, you can use more JPEG
compression and/or lower resolution, resulting in smaller files.
Uploads may range from around 120K for a small, wallet-size photo, to 1MB. In this, as in
the following question about resolution,
there is a trade-off between upload time and photo quality. Generally speaking, larger
files make better prints (but take longer to upload).
A rule of thumb - a digital photo of around 400K is generally the right size for
a good quality print.
| Print Size |
Minimum Image Resolution |
| 4 x 6" |
800 x 1500 pixels |
| 5 x 7" |
1500 x 2100 pixels |
| 6 x 8" and Larger |
1600 x 2200 pixels |

How do I convert my photos to JPEG files?
Before you begin uploading photos from your PC into Print@FUJICOLOR, your
files must be saved in JPEG format (.jpg). You can use any image-editing
application available to convert the files. Throughout the process of the
conversion, try to maintain the pixel dimension (i.e. resolution) matching the
required print size as illustrated in the table below.
In order to optimise the upload time you may choose to reduce the file size
through the Jpeg compression level. A compressed JPG file with 300 Kb or above
file size is acceptable.
| Print Size | Minimum Image Resolution |
| 4 x 6" | 800 x 1200 pixels |
| 5 x 7" | 1500 x 2000 pixels |
| 6 x 8" | 1500 x 2000 pixels |
| Larger sizes | 1600 x 1200 pixels |
|
Note: Any sizes less than the above may result in pixilated prints.
| Sizing photos to aspect ratios | |
The "aspect ratio" of a photo is the relationship between its
height and width. For example, a square photo has an aspect ratio of 1:1 - the
width is equal to the height.
Aspect ratio is important when we print a photo in a standard size -
4 x 6", 5 x 7", 6 x 8", 8 x 10", 8 x 12",
10 x 15". As long as the relationship between your photo and the chosen
print size is standard for the height and width of the photo, the entire photo
will fit on the print. If the dimensions of the photo are too tall or too wide,
or square, the photo will not occupy all the space on the print.
This example shows a square photo on a 4 x 6" print. The extra space on
the print is filled by a white border.
